Do you ever notice how seemingly small encounters, decisions, or words, can have a huge, long-lasting impact?

A couple we met recently have been married for more than 60 years. They gave this story in response to my question: “How did you two meet each other?”

Our new friend “Bob” was 17 years old, living with his family on the prairies of Western Canada when he became disgruntled with his father. So Bob walked to the highway with a few dollars in his pocket and the clothes on his back, planning to hitchhike west to British Columbia.

He stuck out his thumb. No cars seemed to be headed west. But a car going east stopped, so he crossed the road and took their offer of a ride.

Arriving in Southern Ontario, he eventually met his wife-to-be, came to faith in Christ, and raised a family.

East of the prairies, not West. All because he crossed a highway.

PS: Other questions that deliver interesting stories are:

  • Where did you grow up? What was that like for you?

  • How did you get into your line of work?
