Valentine’s Day. Now more than ever, plan to show love today by encouraging someone else. What better gift is there than helping someone feel the courage to go on, to persevere, to grow. Here are some ways:

  • Ask young servers or cashiers about their plans for the future. Affirm their goals and dreams with “I am sure that will work out well for you. Go for it!” They face a complex and scary world out there and you may be a lone voice of hope in their lives.

  • Keep a bin of possible small gifts, along with clear cellophane and ribbon. Build a gift with a basket, mug, or book as a base. Add drink powder packets, nuts, bath items, gift card to a coffee shop etc. Wrap it all in cellophane or a cellophane bag, tie it with a ribbon, and deliver it to someone. (Trust me, there is something about the cellophane that says: “You are special!”)

  • Get notecards, or blank greeting cards and write a note to someone with a quotation, a compliment, a verse, a prayer to brighten their day and/or express your gratitude. Mail it or deliver it.
