Perspective Blog for December 13, 2020

One of my favorite memories is Christmas Eve. Our Grandma, our Mom, and our “Aunt Bets” watched while us kids did some sort of real-meaning-of-Christmas song or poems. Then we went to bed and waited.

These three single women were noted for having great senses of humor.

We listened from the upstairs hall for them to start playing with a toy or two, meant as gifts for us kids. Usually it was some sort of wacky wind-up toy which they would run on the floor and giggle while it worked.

Upstairs we were keeping our own giggles quiet because we were supposed to be sleeping. What a heritage it is to have known women who loved to laugh and have fun.

One Christmas Eve, we were awakened after midnight for a wedding downstairs. Our friend, “Aunt Bets” got married in our living room on December 25. (They had applied for the marriage license, and it was not valid until the third day after purchase and this happened to be Christmas Day.)

When the minister’s deep voice boomed out the groom’s new-to-us- middle name of Augustus, we suppressed some chuckles. At 1:00 am, everything is funnier…
