On these days that bridge the Canadian Thanksgiving and the American one, here is a timely prayer from Susan L. Lenzkes…
Jesus, please teach me to appreciate what I have, before time forces me to appreciate what I had.
The best way I know to do this is to keep a gratitude journal. There is something about writing it down that forces me to notice more. Studies show that physical note taking (yes, with a pen and paper!) leads to more memory retention than using a word processor.
My entries are both mundane (warm clean shower water) and monumental (a new grandchild). This year Dave and I have each lost one of our sisters, and the freedom to travel and visit other family members, blessings we may have sometimes taken for granted before.
I have lamented missing most of my sixth grandchild’s first year milestones. But a few weeks ago, we were having a Facetime chat with Maisie’s mother, and she pointed the camera at Maisie holding on to the couch. Then, as if on a divine cue, the baby took her first steps while we watched.
And I thanked God for technology and cell phones.
