One of the best aids to forming good habits is “choice architecture.” James Motivation is overrated: plan your environment so good decisions are easy.

Someone wanted to watch less television and to learn guitar. He took the batteries out of his remote, and set up his music stand and guitar in the living room. It was now easier to come home, ignore the TV, and pick up the guitar.

From James Clear:  (and I hope you have bought his book by now!)

  • Environment is the invisible hand that shapes human behavior.

  • Every habit is context- dependent.

  • The most powerful of all human sensory abilities is vision.

  • Visual cues are the best catalyst of our behavior.

  • Make the cue a big part of your environment.

  • Be the designer of your world and not merely the consumer of it.

The file cabinet I pass by often each day has an open binder with charts about my habits. A pause there, pen in hand, reviewing, checking off, helps to keep me on track. A happy place, with colored paper.

PS: The charts are like a trellis – a structure that gives a place for the true growth that only God can give.
