The other day I had the privilege of hearing a man speak who has had a lifetime of wonderful work and personal experiences. He is an administrative leader in an important field, with responsibilities that affect the lives and welfare of many, many people.
Afterwards, I approached him and said, “Have you ever written a book about your life?” He smiled in surprise. “You’re the first person who has ever suggested it!”
I told him that someone said: “When a person dies, a library of stories dies with him.”
Perhaps this man will take up my suggestion. I hope so. I am tired of hearing about the seemingly shallow lives of some celebrities.
There are so many wonderful people who simply show up to life and do it well, for the benefit of others. If there is an older person in your life or family, encourage them to tell you their life stories, either by being interviewed on video or by dictating for someone to write. Summer family gatherings may be a good time to do this!
