As Jesus entered a village, ten socially-ostracized men with leprosy called out to him from a distance: “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
In Jewish law, a leper had to be examined by a priest to prove that his or her skin was healed of this dreaded disease. So when Jesus replied to these ten men, “Go and show yourself to the priest,” they knew what He meant: “I am healing you.”
They ran, sandals flapping on the hot, dry dust. One of the ten stopped, ran back, threw himself down at Jesus’ feet, and worshiped in gratitude.
Centuries have come and gone but I think that the “gratitude ratio” is about the same: for every ten people helped, only one remembers to say thank-you. Or for every ten blessings we receive in an hour, we only notice one.
In a simple notebook or your phone notepad, make it a regular practice to number and write down blessings: fresh air, someone’s smile, salvation, a bird’s song, sight, hearing, tastes, touch, fragrances….
This spiritual exercise will strengthen your soul. And when hard times come, this mindset will give you a stable, joyful perspective.
