It was a velvet blue twilight as we walked in the Roman ruins on the edge of Split, Croatia. We paused at a large tree which stood near a walled- in area where, long ago, persecuted Christians gathered to pray.
Further on, we stood at the edge of a Colosseum where Christians had been martyred.
Our evening stroll was gentle and quiet, in a place that had witnessed desperate prayers and brutal deaths. But I believe there is a “spirituality of place” and I felt it there. Such a privilege it will be to meet these brave believers one day in heaven.
Did you know that there is a “Faith Hall of Fame”? In the New Testament letter to the Hebrews it lists many people who believed God and suffered in various ways.
But the writer sums it up: “They were poor, abused, and treated badly. The world was not good enough for them!”
(Hebrews 11:37,38 NCV)
Indeed.
