French philosopher Simone Weil said that only two realities can pierce the human heart. One is beauty and the other is suffering.
The majesty of snow-capped mountains, a rim around a blue alpine lake
The soft perfection of a newborn baby
The elegance of a white calla lily
The fragrance of lavender
The sound of a symphony
All of this and more speak of order and design.
Question for you:
What have been moments of beauty that have opened up your heart to the Creator?
As for suffering…Recently I watched a documentary about the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. A physician approached one of the widows right after the crash and the death of her beloved husband.
“Can I give you something for your nerves?” the doctor kindly asked.
She replied: “I am not nervous. But if you have something for a broken heart, I will take it.”
Another question for you:
How has suffering touched your heart, in ways that are positive?
