French poet and essayist Henry de Montherlant  made this profound comment:

We like someone because;

We love someone although.

Often I have laughed or smiled about another person’s endearing qualities:

  • Her laughter/sense of humor

  • His deep resonant speaking voice

  • Her ability to tell a story

  • His skill at fixing/building

And we should enjoy the strengths of people we know.

But let’s not confuse them with true love, which often involves patience (“although”).

I love him/her although:

  • He burps often.

  • She is late for tea dates.

  • He misses “social cues.”

  • She rarely combs her hair.

And yes, we can love and like the same person. But we can think we “love” a lot of people, when really we just “like” a lot of them!
