French poet and essayist Henry de Montherlant made this profound comment:
We like someone because;
We love someone although.
Often I have laughed or smiled about another person’s endearing qualities:
Her laughter/sense of humor
His deep resonant speaking voice
Her ability to tell a story
His skill at fixing/building
And we should enjoy the strengths of people we know.
But let’s not confuse them with true love, which often involves patience (“although”).
I love him/her although:
He burps often.
She is late for tea dates.
He misses “social cues.”
She rarely combs her hair.
And yes, we can love and like the same person. But we can think we “love” a lot of people, when really we just “like” a lot of them!
